THE ART OF VITICULTURE

SINCE 1747

The history of Quinta São José do Barrilário officially begins in 1747 when it was recognized as such.

However, its origins date back even further, where the art of viticulture was already present.

The name "Barrilário" was not chosen by chance; it derives from the word "barril" and the suffix "-ário," indicating this was the place where wine barrels were stored and cared for, essential to the region's economy and culture.

This name not only recalls ancient winemaking traditions but also reflects the estate's intimate connection with wine, a legacy that endures to this day.

THE JESUITS ORDER

The connection of Quinta São José do Barrilário to the Jesuit Order is a special chapter in its history.

Founded in 1534 by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the Jesuits were known for their missionary and educational work, as well as their impact on agriculture.

At the estate, they introduced innovative agricultural methods that transformed wine production in the region.

Their influence is still felt, especially in the chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph, a sacred space that bears witness to the Jesuits' devotion and commitment to shaping the future of this place.

ORIGIN OF BARRILÁRIO

THE LEGEND

The legend that truly embodies the spirit of this estate tells of a remarkable incident.

It is said that, on a distant day, a man had an unusual accident on one of the estate's slopes: he fell into a barrel and began a rapid descent down the hill.

In his desperation during the fall, he prayed to Saint Joseph, asking for a miracle to protect him.
And so it happened.

When the barrel finally came to a stop at the bottom of the slope, the man emerged unscathed, attributing his survival to the saint's miracle.

In gratitude, the place became known as Quinta São José do Barrilário, honoring both the barrel and the divine intervention that saved the man.

ICONOGRAPHY

THE LOGO

This representation is more than just a logo; it is a tribute to the history and faith that have shaped the estate's identity.
